Jack Higgins on Hex
From
uksfbooknews.netcame a chat with Joh Higgins about his work on
issue #28 of Jonah Hex: "We're doing a Jonah Hex story for
DC. They've given me another script that is completely pared down to
the right amount of direction yet still giving their personal story
signature. I cannot over emphasize how good it is to work on such a
script. Not only because it is clear in story telling for the reader
but it also saves time - an artist doesn't have to fight against
inconsistencies that can sometimes only become apparent once the
visual interpretation of a given script starts."

Find out here, as guest artist Ryan Sook illustrates

Early on when fans started expressing concern co-writer Jimmy Palmiotti added the following: D.C. comics p.r. department is going to try to push the trade book like hell...so we are happy with that...and maybe the origin of Jonah Hex 3 parter may boost the sales a bit but actually we cannot afford any drop in numbers anymore...and were told so.
The first trade paperback (#1-6) found a audience with estimated sales of 3,179 via Diamond in September 06, but disappeared from the top 100 graphic novels for October that year. Its current (23 August 2007) sales ranking at Amazon is #194,847, down from #164,103 in October 06. The Second tpb (#7-12) made an appearance on the top 100 at #38 with estimated sales of 2,730 in April 07, but has been nowhere to be seen in that chart since. It currently has a ranking of #158,300 (23 August 07) with Amazon, an increase from a rank of 165,275 in April. The Third, Origins (#13-18) is currently #849,954 at Amazon with presales before ots release in November 07.
The first issue of the origin storyline (#13) got a few new readers but they don't appear to have hung around for later issues. While the gradual decline in readership continues, the series marched on:
Topic: JONAH HEX: FAR from CANCELLED. (JIMMY PALMIOTTI == 26/4/07, 06:54 PM)
HEY GUYS AND GALS...been getting a lot of mail at my myspace page, on line, in message boards and so on about jonah going the way of cancelled.
let me make you all understand how this series works, so maybe i can put all your fears to rest.
The book CAN and hopefully WILL sell better in the future because of all the hard work of the people buying the book and the retailers getting behind it.
We are hoping for more regular readers and as you may know, the second trade book has come out and is doing well.
We need improvment on all ends of sales and promotions...but dc has been great and understands this book is not a superhero book and understnads it has a different set of rules attached to
it.
What you can expect is that we have, as we speak, 8 more issues in the works and are enlisting some superstars to do more.
Hex isnt going anywhere except to your store monthly and on time.
please continue your support any what you can and lets show the world
of comics that westerns do matter.
Commenting on other cancellations at DC comics Rich of All
The Rage mentioned Jonah:
The one book which seems to escape the chopping block despite
low sales is the wonderful "Jonah Hex" despite such high profile
and high-priced talent Darwyn Cooke and JH Williams as guest
artists. While it's commendable that Didio and DC continue to
support and expand beyond the cape and spandex genre, it's good to
see writer Jimmy Palmiotti's relationship with Dan DiDio remains as
strong as when they used to co-write "Superboy" together!
The series ended hovering around sales of 10000 which had seen other titles axed, but with the shift to All Star Western and changes to the series format as part of DCnU. Reports at the time suggested that the powers that be at DC had given Jimmy and Justin until spring 2012 to improve the readership numbers.
