NZ On Air

formally the Broadcasting Commission, is an autonomous Crown entity and commission of the New Zealand Government responsible for providing funding for broadcasting and creative works. The commission operates largely separate from government policy but must follow directions from the Minister of Broadcasting. NZOA is responsible for the funding of public broadcasting content across television, radio and other media platforms. It is also a major investor in New Zealand independent producers.

Mission Statement (1996)

The purpose of NZ On Air is to be a catalyst for distinctive New Zealand broadcasting.

NZ On Air's mission statement includes four broad goals. These goals are :

  • To fund programming on radio and television about New Zealand and New Zealand interests;
  • To maintain and, where appropriate, extend the coverage of television and radio to New Zealand communities that would otherwise not receive a commercially viable signal;
  • To encourage the establishment and operation of programme archives that are likely to be of historical interest in New Zealand.
  • To maximise income from the collection of the Broadcasting Fee to provide funding for New Zealand broadcasting.

Local Content Reports

Between 1988 and 2016 they conducted and published annual research reports measuring local content on the main free-to-air (FTA) channels.
