Freeview was launched in May 2007, preparing for analogue switch-off, which began on 30 September 2012 and was completed on 1 December 2013

It is a television, radio, and data broadcast platform, Freeview Limited is a joint-venture company whose shareholders include Television New Zealand, TV Works, Māori Television, and Radio New Zealand. It is structured to encourage Free To Air broadcaster participation and competition.

Freeview aggregates television, radio, and data services on two distribution platforms – DTH (Direct to Home) digital satellite and DTT (digital terrestrial television) under a single brand and Electronic Programme Guide (EPG).

logoFreeview launched an an on-demand service in 2015, offered as an addition to Live TV integrated into Smart TVs, connected set-top boxes and recorders. It provided access to free on-demand content from most free to air broadcasters until TVNZ withdrew its content and the service was closed 12 December 2022.
