New TVNZ kidult mystery-thriller

The Press, 9 September 1989

Spectacular special effects and appearances by such famous faces as Ilona Rodgers and Bruno Lawrence are some of the highlights of a new Television New Zealand science fiction mystery, “Night of the Red Hunter,” starting on Sunday at 6 p.m. on Two. The four-part kidult mystery-thriller was penned by Ken Catran, who also wrote “Hotshotz,” the BMX thriller “Steel Riders” (which has sold to 36 countries), and the critically acclaimed sci fi adventure “Children of the Dog Star.”

Taking the lead roles in "Night of the Red Hunter” are two newcomers to television - Toby Laing and Toni Driscoll, both aged 13. They play Peter (Toby Laing) and Maggie (Toni Driscoll), two youngsters from very different worlds, who for different reasons are on the run from their pasts.

While the rest of the world is intent on observing the visit of the fiery Comet Nimrod, the pair find themselves thrown together in Piper Valley where they are taken in by Jed Piper (Lloyd Scott), his wife Jill (Ilona Rodgers) and their extended family.

They are befriended by Tay (Greer Robson), a young archeology student, and the trio are soon embroiled in the mysteries surrounding Piper Valley. Maggie and Peter start to wonder just who are the Pipers, the kindly benefactors who have' given them refuge? And what is their secret that they have kept so well hidden for the last 30 years?

Perhaps the key lies with Ish Murdie (Bruno Lawrence), the eccentric beachcomber who claims to have found and lost a fortune? Or perhaps it lies under the Piper Valley cemetery? Having strayed there late at night, the children have become aware that after dark, Piper Valley is not all it seems and is patrolled by sinister robed figures. Trapped in a series of otherworldly adventures, Peter and Maggie are soon caught up in a desperate attempt to save their planet.
