The virus came from nowhere. Different and much more deadly than any virus before. It killed all the adults in the world. Every single one.
It's still incredible to think of. Hospitals became morgues, death was everywhere. The cities emptied and every young person in the world became an orphan. They all had to look out for themselves.
And from the darkness and chaos came a new order of sorts. Gangs and tribes of young people with only one common code. Survival.
Survival meant being strong. Having enough food and resources. If you were small, having a safe place to hide. Because the weak were trampled and the only law was strength.
But there must be a better way, otherwise nothing lies ahead but endless night. So these stories are about how our tribe, the Mall Rats, came together. We must tell our stories, because perhaps by talking about ourselves we can find a way out of the darkness.
Our stories are our genesis. The first steps on a journey from yesterday to tomorrow. Our chronicles for those who come after.

There are a good number of novels based on the show

Mall Rats by Ken Catran
Amber and Ebony outwit a pack of wild dogs; Bray returns to his old home but discovers something shocking: Jack stumbles on a power-crazed group; Ryan finds true love - or does he?
Tai-San records these and other stories so that the Mall Rats have a history as well as an existence. Each of the stories is strikingly different - by turn shocking, terrifying, exciting, touching, funny, sad but often uplifting. Many of the Mall Rats' secrets have never before been told.
