by Alexander Guyan, being produced in Auckland by Douglas Drury, relies for its impact on character development and the building-up of tension and atmosphere. Sam Hackett, a book-lover, falls in love with Jo, a young librarian. But he had not counted on the interference of Miss James, a sour librarian, a bit of a martinet. She thinks books are dead—she calls them coffins. Death lurks in her drawer. Behind her back they call her "the undertaker". Even the habitués of her library are old men waiting out their last days.
All the actors were from Auckland except Jeannette Lewis, of Wellington, who played the part of Miss James. Stephen O’Rourke, an actor at the Mercury Theatre, Auckland, played Sam Hackett, Elizabeth Pritchard was Jo, Alan Carlisle was Charles Roberts, Pamela Merwood played Grace Roberts, Yvonne Cawley was Mrs James and Ernest Stanley was Mr Cutter.
