The N.Z.B.C. is In the course of producing, in its Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch studios, a number of single television plays by New Zealand writers.

Mr William Austin, head of drama for the corporation, said these plays are to be mounted as a series, under the title, “New Zealand Playhouse.”

“It is hoped to begin the presentation of 'New Zealand Playhouse’ which will include at least six plays, to coincide with the introduction of the N.Z.B.C.’s evening network transmission on October 29,” (1973) he said.

“Plays in the series will be presented each week until early December.” Most of the plays would be of 30 minutes’ duration, but one would probably be of 50 minutes’.

“Some experienced television writers have been commissioned, but a number of new writers will also be employed, which is one of the intentions of ‘New Zealand Playhouse,’” said Mr Austin.

“Another purpose of the single play production regime is to allow intensive forward planning by the drama section for series and serials for 1974,” he said. “It is hoped to resume series production in October, and thus launch a strong continuity of drama programmes for the future.”
