Marnie Morgan, Jim Moriarty and Riwia Taylor star in THE GATHERING (8.15pm), a play by New Zealander Rowley Habib, whose earlier play "The Death of the Land was broadcast on radio last year. "The whole thing arose." says Habib, "from something a friend of mine told me about another friend of his who was embarrassed at a situation that developed when a relative died in a place in Newtown just a little slum of a place and all the relatives arrived for a tangi and they were horrified at the conditions in which they had to conduct it-all the street noises and kids running around.
The tangi, then, is the play's central action, but the theme borne out through this action is the way in which Māori must adapt to cope with contemporary city existence, and the ensuing conflict when they then come up against traditional Māori values.
