A song contest running over 7weeks that aimed to present what was new in religious music.
Over 900 entries were received ranging from traditional-type hymns to “religious rock,” and in one case the score for an entire musical.
As hoped a great number of entries were modern-day expressions of religious feeling from all sorts of people —a whole class of school children combined for one effort, a prisoner at Paretnoremo made his contribution, and another entrant sent in no fewer than 30 compositions.
Their efforts were assessed by a panel of judges which consisted of entertainer, Ray. Woolf; a clergyman, John Murray; and a musican, Tony Baker.
Artists who will perform the songs include Ray Columbus, Bunny Walters, Christine Smith, The Certain Sounds, The Māori Theatre Trust, and Edson and Coles.
Father Ronald McKendry, of Auckland, was the winner of this religious-song contest. His winning entry was April Wine.
