NZBC production of the Heitor Villa-Lobos Ballet. Starring Jon Trimmer, Jill Morice, Jennifer Carson, and Linda Anning

The last performance by the New Zealand Ballet under the New Zealand Ballet and Opera Trust. John Callender, the New Zealand Ballet’s then ballet master, choreographed and re-wrote the story lines for this television production.

The story is set in the South American jungles of Uirapuru, the Bird of Love. It tells of how he was sought by a tribe of Indians, captured, and of his escape. The music was written by Heitor Villa-Lobos in 1917 and dedicated to the great French dancer Serge Lifar.

To create the Amazonian jungle set, designer Nick Reed and the CHTV3 set department used 200 pot plants, 10 large sacks of peat, two truckloads of vines and creepers, 40 tree silhouettes and half a can of cobweb spray.

Music played by the N.Z.B.C. Symphony Orchestra, conductor Alex Lindsay.
Producer for the N.Z.B.C. by Peter Sharp.
