The ballet “Pineapple Poll” was adapted by Charles Mackerras from one of the Gilbert, and Sullivan operettas and was first introduced in London in 1951. The story tells of the dashing Captain Belaya of the H.M.S. Hot Cross Bun, the naval man with whom all the women of Portsmouth are in love.
The "Pineapple Poll” of the title is one of the more colourful ladies of the town who causes trouble for everyone when she decides to board ship, disguised as a sailor.
In a New Zealand Ballet Company production of “Pineapple Poll,” some of the main parts were danced by Louise MacElroy, Jon Trimmer, John Callander, and Jan Blanch.
Peter Sharp produced the programme at CHTV3 with N.Z.B.C. designer Al Harbott and Bryan Ashbridge adapting the ballet for television presentation.
