From Kerr, Graham "Television cookbook" (1968)
Normally, international television shows are created in the United States. England, Canada and to a lesser extent Australia. Until this date New Zealand had not yet joined the creative race. On the 20th September, 1959 within days of their first television signal, a New Zealand critic. G. Marik wrote in the Auckland Star The suave and competent appearance of Flight Lieutenant. Graham V. Kerr as a deft cooking demonstrator can be nominated as perhaps the best live studio show to date This was the birth of an international piece of showmanship, craftsmanship and from time to time a piece of authentic creative artistry, With few departures the show has remained a one man performance
Using New Zealand as a base the programme at that time called Entertaining With Kerr successfully crossed the Tasman Sea into the more competitive Australian scene Still in prime night-time slots it continued through to and beyond July 1968 when, after nearly ten years of trial, error and development the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation purchased an initial 65 episodes from Verm Ferber of Fremantle of Canada, to be shown in colour on the full CBC network.
The recipes contained in this volume are those shown on this series now called The Galloping Gourmet
Having viewed only 12 episodes of the series the CBC renewed for a further 65 episodes, the recipes from which will be printed for you in Volume 2 of Graham Kerr's Television Cookbook It seems that the Galloping Gourmet is a product of the time in which we live, a time that has taken us through war restrictions into the era of relative affluence and plenty when the need to know about the good things of life was an urgent status game Now we are aware more accustomed perhaps and certainly not so self conscious Grown up enough in fact to laugh at ourselves and to enjoy fully the very basic, warm and hospitable pastime of cooking for friends Graham Kerr and his lovely producer wife, Treena, reflect this honesty of time in the Galloping Gourmet. We hope over many years it will be for you a source of entertainment, enjoyment and information.
